No (R)egret – well just a few.

It was always going to happen. Being summoned to Inverness for work in late September is always risky. To date it hasn’t been costly from a bird point of view, but this time a call at lunch break on day 2 away was ominous. It was Tony Marr. I took the call to be informed that he had just found a Cattle Egret on Eoropie machair, near The Butt.

“How long till you can get up” he asked.

I had to break the news that several hours travel involving bus, ferry and drive lay between us and I wouldn’t make it by dark. Darn.

Come this morning – negative news. Double darn.

This is just the second Western Isles record, the first being on the outskirts of Stornoway on 16th-17th August 2007. Fortunately I managed to see that one.

• Thanks to Tony for sharing his images
