Extinction imminent for Golden winged Warbler?

That is the prognoses for Golden winged Warbler unfortunately. Though the Manitoba population might be rising slightly the bigger picture is that the species is being bred out by the western Blue winged Warbler which is hybridising regularly and diluting the Golden gene pool. DNA work was shown that the Manitoba birds are some of the few ‘pure’ ones left – but for how long? It’s an interesting situation, an event brought on by man and land change, which has allowed Blue wings to cross the Appalachian Mountains and dominate the Golden wings. A classic case of incomers breeding out the locals.

It was a fantastic buzz to see six and hear five birds in the aspen forest. Bird Studies Canada are working on this species and have a dedicated monitoring project set up. Morte details here.

These birds put to bed a 22 year old ghost for me. I remember the heart break of Kent in 1989 when I couldn’t get down to see the only European record of Golden winged Warbler at the time due to University exams. I waited till the Easter holidays to try but it was too late. Birding sidekick Stuart Green had gone south with Pete Gordon and Rory Hamilton and they had connected which made the pain even harder to bear. Mind you at least this time I didn’t have to wander around a Tesco supermarket and housing estate with 2,000 other misfits to find the bird!

If you want to see one, get your act together now get your flights booked for Manitoba. The next geenration might only be able to look at these photos and ponder.

Nice, but if hybridisation is killing of GWG can the RSPB not help out with an eradication programme for Blue-wings, like they did over here with Ruddy Duck etc? Come on Martin, get yer gun out………………

This is what’s happening to the white people of North America. And I thought it was just people, but, no, birds are affected also.

The GWWA are in the USA not the UK and so not the RSPB responsibility. They are both natural occurring species not there should be no interference if they go extinct then so be it. The problems in NJ and NY are that the local electrical companies have contracted with companies to clear the brush from under the pylons and they are doing such a great job there is no habitat left and so no breeding sites for the warblers.I live here and its almost as if they are trying to exterminate these species from NJ, its a disgrace.
