A busy weekend

Saturday saw me and Tristan head out. Barred Warbler was still in Brue then we looked at each other in astonishment as we stood on Tristan’s doorstep in suburban Stornoway and a Yellow browed Warbler began to call from the garden. The omens were good. Maybe not for the YBW though as it headed off into the notorious Cearns housing Estate! Another YBW in the gully by the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ at Tolsta (with Garden Warbler and Crossbill also notched up) and another Barred in Gress and we were doing well. The momentum them slipped away and we ended up in Tarbet, Harris with just a juv Scaup and a late Arctic tern to show for our afternoon efforts.
Sunday dawned with more easterlies and clear skies. Redwings and Brambling everywhere (day tallied of 300 and 210). Jack Snipe in Brue and 14 Crossbills was a surprise. Tristan found a Richards Pipit at Swainbost cemetery so I headed north and dipped.
Working south highlights from then on were:
Galson: Blackcap + juv WTE + juv Golden Eagle + Fieldfare
Borve – nowt!
Siadar: Common Rosefinch and Pied Fly (20 Pinks over)
Barvas : Golden Eagle juv over the coast + 3 Lapland Buntings (100 Pinks over)
Brue: Chiffchaff + 1 Lapland + LB B Gull + 4 Fieldfare (more Pinks)
Bragar: Blackcap and 32 Reed Bunting +8 Lapland Buntings over + 1 Snow Bunting
Shawbost: Blackcap
