Tong Sands and Risso’s

Tong Sands is the main estuary on Lewis and is often neglected. Accessed via Tong, Steinish, Sand Street or from near the hospital it recieves little coverage.

A quick look around today provided a selection of common waders – 60 Knot, 90 Dunlin, single Whimbrel, 26 Curlew and a good smattering of Oysercatchers and Redshanks. The wind was too strong and the key to birding the Sands is to get the tide right. A rising or falling tide, as the amount of mud exposed is less than water present is best.

Meantime if you are interested in Whales and Dolphins keep an eye on this blog which has some local updates from the east of the islands. Better still get yourself to Tiumpain and sees Risso’s Dolphin for yourself.
